1 CLASSIFICATION AND WHERE SPOKEN

Suppire/Minianka, spoken in southeastern Mali, belongs to the Northern Senufo subgroup of Gur Voltaic.

2 NUMBER OF SPEAKERS

Grime (1996) reports 923,000 speakers of Susu and 187,800 speakers of Yalunka. Platiel (1978) gives a total of 505,000 Susu speakers and 113,000 Yalunka speakers. Voegelin and Voegelin (1977) give a combined total of 392,000, and Houis (1981) reports 550,000.

3 DIALECT SURVEY

Although no thorough dialect surveys of Susu have come to our attention, Voegelin and Voegelin (1977) report that the two dialects are virtually indistinguishable.

4 USAGE

Susu is an important regional language of northern Sierra Leone and western Guinea (coastal region).

5 ORTHOGRAPHIC STATUS

No information concerning the orthographic status of Susu has come to our attention.
