The Webbook of African Language Resources
![]()
This work represents the combined efforts of numerous individuals around the world who have contributed to various aspects of this project, from its design to the providing of information on the languages presented in this volume. Of these literally hundreds of individuals involved, the work of those described below merit special attention. The director of the African Studies Center at Michigan State University, David Wiley provided both inspiration and guidance for this project. The project assistants, Kay Irish, Everyl Yankee, Penny Clark, Kulikoyela Kahigi, Don Osborn, Amadou Fofana, Kuria Githiora, Terry McCaskey and Tim Carmichael handled correspondence, data gathering, logistics, and word processing.
The African Studies Center staff also contributed, especially Melba Lacey and
Julie Smith, who managed the books, Elizabeth Johnston and Sabine Barcotta,
who edited the manuscript, Zinta Conrad, Ann Schneller, and Lidwien Kapteijns,
who helped a great deal in constructing proposals which made the funding of
this project possible. Finally, Kristine Isbell, Saundra Redmond, Ann Alexander
and Kirsten Gilbert typed and corrected the manuscript. Thank you and well done.
This project owes a special debt of gratitude to all those who supplied direct information for the individual languages presented in this volume. Their names are listed by language in Appendix C. So too we owe gratitude to Dora Johnson of the Center for Applied Linguistics for making available to us materials which facilitated updating the lists of bibliographic materials presented for many of the languages, and to Joseph Lauer of the African Section of the Michigan State University Library for his help with numerous questions during the final revisions of the bibliographic sections.
We are also indebted
to the United States Department of Education for financial support to and encouragement
of this project. Finally, we are grateful to two journals, Studies in African
Linguistics and Journal of African Languages and Linguistics, for
publishing notices concerning this project.
