Edo or Bini belongs to the North-Central Edo Group of Kwa and is spoken in Bendel State, Nigeria.
UBS (1982) and UBS (1997) notes one million total speakers. Voegelin and Voegelin (1977) cite a figure of 100,000 first-language speakers. Herault (1981) suggests 900,000.
Edo is a lingua franca in the midwestern region of Nigeria and is also a national language. Grimes (1996) reports that it is used "in radio, television, adult, primary, and secondary education, dictionary, history text, and mother tongue authored literature."
