
The African
Language Program at MSU offers the following languages through the
supervised, tutorial mode at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced
levels:
Acholi, Akan/Twi,
Amharic, Arabic*, Bambara/Mandingo, Bemba, Fulfulde/Pulaar, Ganda,
Hausa*, Igbo, Kikuyu, Kpelle, Krio, Lingala, Luganda, Malagasy,
Mende/Bandi/Loki, Nyanja/Chewa, Ndebele, Oromo, Ruanda/Rundi, Rwanda,
Shona, Somali, Swahili*, Swazi, Temne, Tigrinia, Tsonga, West African
Pidgin English, Wolof, Xhosa, Yoruba, and Zulu.
*Beginning
and Intermediate classes are taught in the classroom mode with advanced
classes taught in the supervised mode.
The faculty-trained,
on-demand tutorial involves individual (or small-group study) with
a tutor who is a native speaker of the language under the guidance
of a faculty language supervisor who has a structural knowledge
of the language and an understanding of the language learning process.
In this mode, the learner takes the primary responsibility
for organizing and managing the study of the selected language as
well as other responsibilities.
Courses offered
through the supervised, tutorial mode are available on a demand
basis to graduate students upon approval of the supervisor, provided
that specific conditions have been
met.
Meeting times for all supervised tutorials are arranged.
