Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies
MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

Graduate Program

The Center actively seeks to provide services and information for graduate students seeking to conduct higher degree research in Latin America and the Caribbean. Graduate students at MSU have been awarded research grants to work in Latin American from Fulbright-Hays, the Inter-American Foundation, Tinker Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the Organization of American States, as well as FLAS grants for language study.

Tinker Field Research Grants
The purpose of the CLACS Tinker Field Research Grants is to award graduate students, particularly those with little or no experience in Latin America, with pre-dissertation travel funds (international and in-country) for short stays in Spanish and Portuguese speaking Latin America. The grants are intended to help students acquire knowledge of language and culture, to gather research data, and to develop contacts with scholars and institutions.

Masters candidates may earn certificates but generally, the majority of students who pursue a Graduate Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies will be doctoral candidates. Students interested in gaining a certificate should fill out the requisite form, available at the Center and arrange for an interview with the CLACS Director. While no notation is made on the student's Michigan State University transcript, the Center Graduate Certificate attests to the fulfillment of the following requirements.
