Expenses

A number of expenses are not covered by the JCMU Program and Housing fees. The three major expenses are:

  • Airfare: Round-trip airfare is estimated at $1400. Students will make their own flight arrangements within the program schedule, but JCMU will designate a "recommended flight" that will be met at the airport by JCMU staff.
  • Food: Students living in the Residence Hall must provide their own meals, and students living in a homestay must provide their own lunches. More information on this can be found on our housing pages.
  • Travel Expenses: Fares for travelling to and from the airport and JCMU are the responsibility of the student, as is all personal travel expenses. Travel estimates are listed below:
    • JCMU to KIX: around ¥5000, or about $50.
    • JCMU to Nagoya: around ¥4000, or about $40.
    • JCMU to Kyoto: ¥1100, or about $11.
    • JCMU to Osaka: ¥1900, or about $19.
    • JCMU to Tokyo (by Shinkansen): around ¥12000, or about $120.

Additional out-of-pocket expenses are very difficult to estimate, given variations in the yen/dollar exchange rate and personal spending habits. Students should budget up to $3000 for fall or spring semester, and $1500 for the summer semester for these expenses, which include food, personal travel, entertainment, gifts, and other miscellaneous items.
