Japanese Innovation Management

This intensive two-week program will provide students with the background needed to understand the Japanese environment for innovation. Students will explore the impact of Japanese tradition and culture on management practices in industry and track sources of success and barriers to the advancement of technological innovation in Japan. The course will help students to understand how Japanese firms achieved global competitive status and what the current tendencies are. It will provide the opportunity to study examples of real-world managerial cases in selected companies. Lectures and class discussions will be supplemented with a guided plant visit, giving students direct exposure to business organization in Japan.

Program Leader: Dr. Karol Pelc combines the experiences of a manager and engineer in industry with a distinguished academic career. He holds doctoral degrees in economics/management and in electronics. He has lectured internationally and conducted research on Japanese technology and management for over 18 years. Dr. Pelc has published over 120 papers, four books, and chapters in 16 other books on technology and innovation management. Housing: Students will live in apartments which are designed for double occupancy, each with a private bedroom/ study and shared kitchen, dining area and bathroom. The residential building also contains a computer lab, wireless internet, laundry, television room, weight room and lounge.

Academic Focus: 3-credit Technology and Innovation Management in Japan course

Requirements: No prior Japanese language study is required. Students in various fields and majors are encouraged to apply.

Costs*: Program Fee - $1,800 (includes tuition, housing, books and health insurance)

Scholarships: Consortium member university students receive an automatic $200 scholarship.
