The
National Consortium for Study in Africa (NCSA) seeks to improve the cross-cultural
learning of students and faculty in the U.S. through study abroad in Africa.
NCSA was founded in
1994 by the 15 U.S. National Resource Centers for African Language and
Area Studies with support from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary
Education (FIPSE) and Michigan State University.
Although Africa is
the second largest continent in size and population, the ancestral continent
of approximately 13 -15 per cent of the U.S. population, and a primary
source of American culture, less than two percent of American students
and faculty who study abroad do so in Africa.
NCSA has the following
goals:
- Enlarge the enrollments
of existing quality programs in Africa, particularly among African-American
and other minority students throughout the U.S.
- Conduct a national
assessment of programs in Africa, including information on enrollment
patterns, types of programs, curricula, academic prerequisites, costs,
reciprocity with African host-institutions, credit transfers, and areas
of problem to be addressed.
- Develop criteria
and exemplary models for short and long-term study in Africa, supported
with new Guidelines for Study in Africa to assist U.S. sponsors
to increase the quality of their programs, especially in their relations
with the African host universities.
- Develop promotional
videos which will provide information about Africa and assist in recruiting
students for programs in Africa.
- Produce and disseminate
a monograph to increase the effectiveness and impact of African study
abroad programs.
- Develop new funding
for students who want to study in Africa by:
- encouraging
sponsoring U.S. universities, colleges, and organizations to adopt
innovative ways which make their African programs more affordable
- increasing
the availability of local university funding for students
- Consult with African
universities and institutions in developing mutually enriching and truly
reciprocal programs in Africa.
