____________________________Multidisciplinary Studies in Durban, South Africa
The newly established MSU-sponsored program at the University of Durban-Westville (UDW) allows undergraduates to study with South African students for a semester or full academic year in Durban. Participants will experience a vibrant culture first-hand and study politics in action in South Africa's transforming society.
UDW consists of a variety of departments that are grouped into the areas of science and engineering, humanities, social science, education, health sciences, law, and business. Most of UDW's courses will be open for enrollment with the exception of fields such as pharmacy and the health sciences. All courses are taught in English with a mandatory introductory course in isiZulu for non-native speakers.
Interested participants must be of at least junior status. Study at UDW will be an exciting adventure and challenge, but students must adequately prepare themselves in advance. An extensive orientation will be offered by the MSU Office of Study Abroad and the African Studies Center. Program dates are: Fall Semester, July 24 - December 1, 2000; Spring Semester, January 31 - June 10, 2001; Academic Year, January 31 - December 1, 2001. Each semester consists of 13 weeks of classes over a period of 18 weeks.

Undergraduate Study at the University of Zimbabwe
Michigan State University has offered an undergraduate study abroad program at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) since 1986.
The study abroad program at UZ is a special feature of the larger linkage agreement between MSU and UZ. Students accepted into this program (by MSU and UZ) will be enrolled as "special students" at the University of Zimbabwe and earn transfer credit. (MSU students remain enrolled at MSU and are allowed to maintain their financial aid.)
1) Arts and Social Studies at UZ: Students can study the arts and social studies for a semester or full academic year. All students will take an intensive, 40- hour language program in Zimbabwe prior to the start of formal classes. For additional information, contact: Office of Study Abroad, 109 International Center, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824- 1035; Tel: (517) 353-8920; Fax: (517) 432-2082; E-mail: studyabroad@osa.msu.edu. Insect Avoidance: Although it is unusual for the casual traveler to Africa to suffer from insect-carried diseases, they are present, and do pose a serious potential threat. The wise traveler takes extra precautions against exposure to biting insects using proper clothing and two products. The first is a DEET-containing insect repellent, the second is permethrin, a repellent for use on clothing. Among the brands of permethrin available are Duranon and Permanone. A six-ounce spray can treat two sets of clothes (socks, pants, shirt). The effect lasts for four or five weeks and will last through several washes. Then the traveler only has to worry about applying the DEET to exposed skin. Find out more about permethrin and other insect avoidance tips at http://www.travelhealth.com
Oral Typhoid Vaccine Unavailable: The pharmaceutical supply houses have reported that they are not able to obtain the oral typhoid vaccine, manufactured by the Berna Corporation. A spokesman for Berna said they are "reconfiguring" the manufacturing plant in Switzerland and that the vaccine would likely not be available until the end of the year. This leaves the injectable vaccines as the only current options: the old typhoid vaccine and the newer Typhim, which causes fewer side effects than the older one, although it is considerably more expensive.
Health Information Service is the BEST such web site. It has: 1. Strong general content on staying safe and healthy while traveling. 2. Links to a broad range of government and private sites. 3. Fun and interesting content - such as a multimedia visit to the rainforest (in RealAudio) and a brief history of tropical disease (with archival photos). 4. It is the ONLY such site to which viewers may submit questions unanswered on the site, and get responses from a travel health physician! (8/99)
