About Us
Mission Statement:
  


    • To educate and raise awareness of MSU students and faculty to the importance of the many faceted U.S. – Canada relationship
    • To provide support to MSU students and faculty in education and research projects related to Canada
    • Liaison for Michigan State University, MSU students and faculty with the Canadian government, Canadian higher education and Canadian public and private sectors for the development and enhancement and implementation of U.S – Canada public policy, cooperative educational linkages and research

    The Centre's mission, to provide teaching, research and outreach to those interested in the many relationships between Canada and the United States, is derived from the university's land-grant ethic. Areas of study include anthropology, American studies, business, economics, English, fisheries and wildlife, food science, geography, history, labor and industrial relations, resource development, and social sciences as well as teacher education.
    The Canadian Studies Centre is among the area studies programs directed by Jeffrey R. Riedinger, Dean of International Studies and Programs.

Notable Facts
  

  • Established in 1958 by A.J.M. Smith, Poet Laureate of Canada, and Russel Nye, Pulitzer Prize winning author, ours is arguably the oldest Canadian Studies program in the U.S.

  • The Centre is comprised of over 70 core faculty, graduate students from 31 departments, Library and Museum staff, and K-12 educators

  • Five of the core faculty hold the rank of University Distinguished Professor

  • The MSU Press publishes more scholarly books on Canada than any other university press in the U.S.

  • The CSC offers an 18-credit specialization in Canadian Studies. Foundational to the Canadian Studies specialization are ISS 336, "Canada: A Social Science Perspective," and IAH 221C, "Canadian Literature and Culture."

  • The MSU Main Library is an official respository for Canadian government documents and offers many electronic resources for use by students and faculty

  • Internships with Canadian law and business firms and government agencies are available to MSU and Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University students
