IVC-MM (International Visitors
Committee Of Mid-Michigan)
Editors' Note: The primary mission of CVIP involves volunteer service to MSU students and scholars. However, the IVC-MM deals with international leaders who visit our community on a short-term basis. This discrepancy was dis-cussed at the October CVIP Board Meeting and the Board unanimously passed a motion "to dissolve CVIP's direct relationship with Inter-national Visitors Committee of Mid-Michigan." From now on, IVC-MM will be under the supervision of OISS, the MSU Office for International Students and Scholars.
The group of eight British Members of Parliament that arrived on September 18 left on the 21st full of high praise for the stellar program Colleen Pero arranged for them. It included presentations by the chairs of both Democrat and Republican parties in Michi-gan; Doug Roberts, former state treasurer and current director of MSU's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research; Bill Ballenger, editor of Inside Michigan Politics; business and labor leaders; and a courtesy visit by LouAnna Simon. Each visitor was matched with a Michigan legislator for a half day, which included an opportunity to observe the Senate in session. Jackson Na-tional Life hosted a reception for the visitors and state legislators, and Colleen and Dan Pero invited them to a barbecue at their home.
Colleen Pero has also volunteered to arrange a program for a group of four Canadian government officials interested in the work-ings of state, county, and local government. Chuck Gliozzo is handling a request for a one-day program in late October for a group of eight Spanish university library directors interested in meeting with various MSU library staff. Marjorie Porter is looking into the possibility of offering home hospitality to the group.
Members of International Visitors Committee of Mid-Michigan arrange programming for short-term international visitors as requested by MSU, the U.S. Government, or private agencies in cooperation with the National Council for International Visitors (NCIV). Marjorie Porter (332-8262 or porter@msu.edu) can provide additional information about IVC-MM.
