April 5
- Attend the Fulbright Informational Workshop for Graduate Students
- In the event of a schedule conflict, consider attending the undergraduate Fulbright workshop. Otherwise, e-mail the MSU Fulbright Program Adviser and request to be added to the mailing list to receive information about the Fulbright application process, future workshops, program deadlines, and other relevant issues.
May
- It is strongly recommended that applicants examine the background information, instructions, and forms provided in the Fulbright-Hays DDRA Grant Application Announcement to develop a working draft prior to announcement of new deadlines. To do this, select "Applicant Info" and scroll down to the PDF for "FY 2011 Grant Application (archived)"
- Begin brainstorming with faculty advisers and colleagues to develop a plan of study/research. Commence an initial draft of a ten page, double-spaced proposal with a two page, double-spaced bibliography as well as a double-spaced curriculum vitae.
- Make appointments with your academic adviser and the professors you plan to ask for letters of recommendation. Provide them with copies of your preliminary proposal, curriculum vitae, and any other helpful information to enable them to submit their recommendation letters online by the deadline set by the e-Grants application. Make a second appointment to review the draft and solicit their suggestions on how to revise and strengthen your preliminary proposal and curriculum vitae.
- Identify and begin contacting collaborating agencies, universities, and/or other organizations in your chosen host country to request letters of affiliation.
June-July
- Solicit the assistance and advice of appropriate faculty, advisers and fellow students or others to review your proposal and curriculum vitae critically. Then revise your application online.
- Contact all of the academic institutions you have attended since high school and request that your transcripts be mailed directly to you. For your MSU transcript, make the request to the Registrar's Office (your Navigator printout is not sufficient). It's okay that these will be called "unofficial" transcripts. You will upload them to the application yourself as a single PDF file.
- Contact the relevant MSU language department to locate a qualified instructor to document your language proficiency, if applicable. Request that the Fulbright-Hays Foreign Language Reference Form be submitted online to include in your application.
- Follow up the initial contact with collaborating agencies, universities or other organizations in your host country to determine the status of your request for a letter of affiliation. Whenever appropriate, provide them with a draft of your proposal. Their letter of affiliation must be printed on the host organization's letterhead stationery. As with your transcripts, you will upload the affiliation letter(s) to your application as a PDF-file.
August
- Schedule follow-up appointments with the individuals you have asked to write recommendation letters. Before your meeting, send them your revised proposal and curriculum vitae for their review and critique. If they have not written your recommendation letter yet, remind them to submit it online to be included in your application before the MSU final deadline.
- Contact the collaborating agency/university/organization in your intended host country if you have not received their letter of affiliation. Remind them to mail it to you or the MSU FPA before the final MSU deadline.
Late August
- The Fulbright-Hays DDRA Grant Application Announcement. Open the e-Application tab, click the "Register" button on the right side of the screen, and follow the directions. List the MSU Fulbright Program Adviser as your MSU Project Director. For additional help in completing the DDRA application, see the Fulbright Proposal Writing Guide.
