Fulbright Programs

On this page you will find a listing of Fulbright grant programs for faculty and students.

Fulbright Fellowship programs are offered in over 140 countries worldwide. They provide grants of $25,000 to $40,000 to cover round trip air travel, a montly living stipend, health and accident insurance, and, in some cases, tuition waivers and research allowances.

If you are familiar with the Fulbright programs, the links below will help you quickly connect to the official Fulbright program Web sites, which include information about application requirements, application opening dates, eligibility, and deadlines.

U.S. Faculty Programs

The Traditional Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program

The original Fulbright program for faculty and professionals from the U.S. to travel overseas and lecture, conduct research or participate in seminars. Some Fulbright Awards close on a rolling timeframe, so please search online for information on available awards for a particular competition. You can search by country, region or discipline.

Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship

This program is for faculty members to conduct research abroad in foreign language or area studies, to improve their knowledge of the culture of the people of an area. The award is administered through the fellow's home university, providing for periods of research between three and 12 months in duration. Fellowships in this category are not awarded for Western Europe.

The project director serves as the only point of contact between the MSU faculty members and the U.S. Dept. of Education and is registered in the U.S. Dept. of Education's e-Application sstem

A faculty member's FRA application must be submitted electronically to the MSU project director, who will review and submit it along with required documentation from MSU Contract and Grant Administration.

Fulbright Alumni Initiatives Award Program

Small institutional grants are awarded to Fulbright alumni to develop innovative projects. These are expected to foster institutionally supported linkages and sustainable, mutually beneficial relationships between the Fulbright scholar's home and host institutions.

Fulbright International Education Administrators Program

In this program, seminars of two to three weeks are designed to introduce participants to the society, culture and higher education systems of foreign countries such as Germany, Japan and Korea. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and should watch for deadline announcements which are different for each country.

Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program

Awards in the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program are viewed as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Candidates should be eminent scholars and have a significant publication and teaching record.

Visiting Faculty Programs

Visiting Fulbright Scholars Program

Each year, 800 faculty and professionals in this program come to the U.S. for advanced research and university lecturing for programs between 3 and six months. Applications are accepted from more than 150 countries participating in these programs through the U.S. Embassy or Fulbright Commission in their respective countries. U.S. institutions may encourage visiting scholars to apply for a particular program and provide them with letters of invitation to submit with their applications.

Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World

This program allows U.S. institutions to host scholars and professionals from predominantly Muslim countries for a short-term, intensive program of lecturing, consultation and public outreach. Specialists from Muslim communities in the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Balkans may apply for a program of three to six weeks. U.S. institutions of higher education with limited programs in the Muslim world may apply if the institution has not received a scholar under this program previously. Liberal arts institutions, minority-serving institutions and community colleges are especially encouraged to apply, and are given preference for awards.

Visiting Fulbright Scholar Occasional Lecturer Program

Small travel awards are offered through this program to enable visiting scholars currently in the U.S. to accept guest lecturing invitations to colleges and universities. Individual faculty, departments and institutions are encouraged to contact scholars directly to invite them to lecture, at which point the scholar may apply for reimbursement of transportation costs. A formal letter of invitation must be included from an institution with the dates of the OLP visit and the lecture topic.

Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program

Visiting scholars from abroad are funded to lecture at U.S. colleges and universities for this program, running either one semester or one academic year. This program is especially appropriate for small liberal arts colleges, minority-serving institutions and community colleges that, otherwise, may not have the opportunity to host visiting scholars. Applications are submitted by U.S. institutions, and they may propose suitable candidates.

Fulbright European Union Scholar-in-Residence Program

Scholars from the European Union are brought to the U.S. in this program, to respond to proposals from research institutions that have established programs in international affairs, business, political science or other related fields in which the presence of an EU expert would be beneficial. Applications are submitted by U.S. institutions, and the visiting scholars are recruited and chosen by the Fulbright Commission in Brussels. Each year, one to four of these programs are awarded.

LASPAU Faculty Development Program

This program supports up to 150 educators in the U.S. each year from Latin American and Caribbean countries. Approximately 60 percent study at the Master's level, 40 percent at the doctoral level. Individual scholars in Latin America and the Caribbean region may apply for this program.

Student Fulbright Programs

This program is available to both MSU seniors who are graduating and graduate students. Applicants must have a B.A. or B.S. before the beginning date of the grant. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

U.S. Graduate Student Programs

U.S. Student Fulbright Program

Sometimes referred to as the "comprehensive" or "full grant" student Fulbright, this program is available to both graduating seniors and graduate students with a B.A. or B.S. before the beginning date of the grant. Approximately 1,200 fellowships are awarded each year in addition to special programs offered under the Islamic Civilization Initiative, Community Service Grants to Russia, teaching English language and conversation and business. The same application form covers all programs.

US Student Fulbright Program Deadlines

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad

This program awards approximately 150 awards each year for six to 12 month grants to support dissertation research outside of Western Europe. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Visiting Graduate Student Programs

Foreign Fulbright Graduate Student Program

More than 1,300 new Foreign Fulbright Fellows enter U.S. universities and colleges each year under this program through which up to two years of funding are given for Master's or doctoral level study. Foreign graduate students apply to the U.S. Embassy or Fulbright Commission in their home country. The deadline for applications varies by home country.

The AMIDEAST Foreign Graduate Student Program

Under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of State, AMIDEAST administers the Fulbright Program for students from the Middle East and North Africa. Students from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Syria, Tunisia, the West Bank/Gaza and Yemen are admitted to graduate programs at universities across the United States with support from this program. Application deadlines vary by home country.
