David D. Horner International Student Scholarship Fund
The purpose of the Horner Fund is to provide emergency Scholarship assistance to students in financial distress and to further the University's interest in obtaining the educational benefits derived from a racially and ethnically diverse student body. The scholarships are made without expectation of repayment. The situations that cause a student to apply for an emergency scholarship are broad-ranging and might be anything from loss of housing to family health issues to unbudgeted academic costs. The characteristics of these situations however, are unanticipated by the student, not of the student's creation and are a threat to the student's ability to remain at MSU. The scholarship will be used as a tool to retain international students whose participation in the classroom and presence on campus foster a varied educational experience that helps all students learn and prepares them for an increasingly diverse society.
After a career of service to international students including eighteen years as Director of the Office for International Students and Scholars at Michigan State University, David D. Horner took his many memories and retired from MSU in 2001. Dr. Horner was recognized nationally as a leader in the field of international education and, in 1995, served as President of the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA): Association of International Educators. His contributions to the profession of international education, his leadership in the field of intercultural communication, and his international contacts are legendary beginning with his days as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand in 1963-65. With the creation of this Fund, his legacy of international friendship will live on. The Office for International Students and Scholars created the David D. Horner Emergency Scholarship Fund Endowment to build a resource that, in perpetuity, can serve international students in financial distress while enrolled and on campus at Michigan State University. Professional colleagues, former students, family, friends, and many others have chosen to make gifts to the Fund as a way to honor the life's work of David D. Horner.
