MSU and National Deadlines

April 25

  • MSU undergrads scheduled to graduate next year and well as master's and doctoral students should attend one of the Fulbright workshops or contact the MSU Fulbright Program Adviser for an individual appointment or to be put on a mailing list to be informed of workshops in early Fall.

May

  • To begin the application process, open Apply Now and follow the instructions. List the MSU Fulbright Program Adviser as your MSU contact. For additional help in completing the IIE application, view the helpful information on the IIE Fulbright web page.
  • Begin brainstorming with faculty advisers and other resource persons to develop a plan of study/research. Commence an initial draft of a two page, single-spaced proposal and a one-page, single-spaced personal statement.
  • Make appointments with your academic adviser and the professors or others you plan to ask for letters of recommendation. Provide them with copies of your preliminary proposal, personal statement, and your on-line application. List the names and e-mail addresses of your three references in the on-line application so that their recommendations can be uploaded. Remind them that an e-mail will be coming from Embark with the link to do so, and that spam filters should be set to allow mail from Embark. Make a second appointment to review the draft proposal and solicit their suggestions on how to revise and strengthen your preliminary proposal and personal statement.
  • Identify and begin to contact likely cooperating agencies, universities, and/or other organizations in your chosen host country to request letters of affiliation.

June-July

  • Solicit the assistance and advice of appropriate faculty, other advisers, and fellow students to review your proposal and personal statement critically. Then revise your application online.
  • Contact all of the academic institutions you have attended since high school and request that unofficial transcripts be mailed to you. Also obtain an unofficial transcript from the MSU Registrar's Office. You will upload all of your transcripts as a single PDF file in accordance with the instructions.
  • Contact the relevant MSU language department to locate a qualified instructor to evaluate your language proficiency, if applicable. Provide the language evaluator with a copy of your preliminary proposal and a copy of your Language Background Report (Form 7 of the application). Request that the Foreign Language Report be mailed directly to the MSU FPA. List the name and e-mail address of your language evaluator in the on-line application so that your evaluation can be uploaded. Remind him or her that an e-mail will be coming from Embark with the link to do so, and that spam filters should be set to allow mail from Embark.
  • Follow up the initial contact with collaborating agencies, universities, or other organizations in your host country to determine the status of your request for a letter of affiliation. Whenever appropriate, provide them with a draft of your proposal. Their letter of affiliation must be printed on the host organization's letterhead stationery.

August-September

  • Reschedule appointments with the individuals you have asked to write recommendation letters. Before your meeting, send them your revised proposal and personal statement for their review and critique. If they have not yet written and submitted your recommendation letter online, gently remind them to do so before the MSU application deadline.
  • If you have not received a letter of affiliation from the collaborating agency/university/organization in your intended host country by August 27, immediately re-contact them and request that they to mail it to you as soon as possible but no later than the MSU application deadline.
  • On or about September 1, enter your IIE application on line to check/confirm that your three recommendation letters and Foreign Language Evaluation Form, if applicable, are attached. Also confirm that you have recieved all university transcript(s), and any host country letters of acceptance, affiliation, and/or endorsement. Once you have received them, upload them to your application in accordance with the instructions.

Be sure your name is at the top of each document.

  • The FPA uploads the materials submitted by the applicants (Statement of Grant Purpose, Personal Statement, and list of relevant courses) to an angel site for viewing by the MSU Campus Fulbright Evaluation Committees.

  • If your interview has not been assigned by the end of September, contact the MSU FPA.

First week of October

  • In this meeting students will be asked to briefly describe their projects. They will also have the opportunity to ask and answer questions.
