Procedural Requirements for Applicants/Recipients of GATI Funds

Funding for GATI comes from:
Title VI grants from the U.S. Department of Education to MSU’s National Resource Centers for Foreign Language and Area/International Studies ( African Studies Center, Asian Studies Center, Center for Advanced Study of International Development, and Women and International Development) and the Center for Latin America and Caribbean Studies. Matching funds are provided by the Office of the Provost through the Dean of International Studies and Programs.

GATI funding principles:
GATI grants can be awarded for up to three years. If funding is renewed past the first or second year of funding, it is conditional on successful accomplishment of the identified outcomes and results in the prior year(s) of the grant.

Three-year cycles of GATI funding, in one-year increments, might involve activities along the following lines:

Year 1: coalescing of a cross-unit, inter-disciplinary group of faculty (and possibly undergraduate and graduate students), with leadership provided by faculty committed to the thematic initiative as a major focus of their research, teaching and outreach.

Year 2: begin to "institutionalize" research initiatives and curricular innovations introduced through GATI funding. These efforts can also be supplemented by external sources of funding. Faculty will have access to grantwriting and budget preparation assistance for these proposals.

Year 3: "graduate" GATI initiatives to other funding sources (that is, for them to obtain other internal or, preferably, external funding to continue operations).

GATI will fund the following types of activities:

  • student assistants to work with faculty coordinators on the programs (e.g. through graduate assistantships, hourly pay, or project pay)
  • travel in support of GATI objectives (to meet with funding agencies or collaborating institutions)
  • supplies and services in support of GATI activities such as conferences and workshops (e.g. facility rentals, meals, speaker travel and honoraria)
  • other costs essential to achieving GATI goals

GATI funding limitations:
GATI funds must be spent in accordance with an approved project budget that is submitted with the proposal.

GATI Award Recipients and Applicants:
Please see the following Procedural Requirements on the allowable usage of the GATI award and the administration of the award. Items covered include general administrative and financial guidelines, travel and meal guidelines, unallowable expenses and funding acknowledgment requirements.
