Undefended Childhood in a Global Context: Structural Challenges to Schooling, Health and Well-Being Among the World’s Children, led by DeBrenna Agbenyiga (Social Work), Deborah Johnson (Family and Child Ecology) and Robert Hitchcock (Anthropology) The project research area takes an interdisciplinary approach to examining the structural challenges facing children in international settings, focusing on education and health. Faculty experts will conduct colloquia and present research to undergraduate and graduate classes. A conference will be held to examine barriers to education, health and well-being of children’s development.
Resource Scarcity and Abundance: Oil, Democratization, and Conflict in the Niger Delta Ravi Bhavnani (Political Science), Rita Kiki Edozie (James Madison), Jiaguo Qi (Geography) and Jennifer Olson (Geography) Though research has been conducted on resource abundance as a causal factor in civil conflicts, this research project focuses on the conflict link of resource scarcity. The researchers will focus on the Niger Delta region, which is characterized by resource abundance and resource scarcity. The project will examine: the ways in which resource abundance has driven resource scarcity; if there are new social cleavages emerging as a result of conflict in the Delta; and, if there is a relation between democratization and conflict in the region.
Sustainable Planning, Design and Construction: Collaborative U.S.-India Research and Outreach, led by Matt Syal (Planning, Design and Construction), Rex LaMore (Planning, Design and Construction), Timothy Mrozowski (Planning, Design and Construction) and Maya Fischhoff (Environmental Science and Policy Program) Concerns about the negative impacts of buildings on the environment are forcing the construction industry to explore sustainable alternatives. Responding to this environmental imperative, the industry has introduced and implemented various “green” planning, design and construction practices. This emphasis on sustainability and environment is taking place in the U.S., but rapidly developing countries such as India are becoming aware of the benefits of new practices. MSU and Indian researchers will collaborate to develop green practices in India.
Political Economy, Governance and Security, led by Brian Silver (Political Science) and Lori Post (Communication Arts and Sciences) The project aims to develop an interdisciplinary initiative on international conflict and cooperation, and political economy and governance, which will develop into a thematic center at MSU. This thematic center will focus on outreach and undergraduate training. Faculty will conduct colloquia and hold conferences on such issues as global markets, corruption, foreign policy, and the new information society. These issues will be further developed to be included in undergraduate and graduate curricula.
