On October 17th, the Visiting International Professional Program (VIPP) at Michigan State University (MSU) was honored to host a group of educational leaders from Kyrgyzstan who were invited by the US Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).  The group has been traveling the U.S. to get a broad overview of U.S. education system and the roles of federal and state governments in education. VIPP has been involved with IVLP since 2016 as part of our international outreach. In this role, we serve as a liaison to connect international visitors to MSU and the local and State governments.

For the Kyrgyzstani group, VIPP arranged a lecture by MSU faculty and a visit to Michigan State Government in Lansing. They first met Professor David Wong, Associate Professor of Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education at MSU. Dr. Wong gave a lecture on the overview of US Educational system and reform efforts.

Kyrgyzstani educational leaders met Dr. David Wong in College of Education.

After the lecture, the Kyrgyzstan group travelled to Lansing to have a Capitol tour and met with Michigan House Representative Tim Kelly to discuss educational budget in Michigan. Kelly serves the 94th District which encompasses part of Saginaw County including the city of Frankenmuth and the townships of Blumfield, Frankenmuth, Albee, Taymouth, Birch Run, St. Charles, Swan Creek, Thomas, Saginaw and Tittabawassee. He welcomed the group and provided insights into education as a State government politician.

The day at MSU and Lansing was short for the Kyrgyzstan group, but they gained knowledge and perspective into US educational system from experts in the field and political standpoint. It was a pleasure for VIPP to host this group.
