Dr. Harriette P. McAdoo (left), Michigan State University professor in the Department of Family and Child Ecology, has traveled to Ghana several times in recent years to study the role of women, parenting, and indigenous industries in that country. She has developed a special connection with the Home Economics Department at the University of Ghana-Legon, which hosted the annual conference of the International Federation of Home Economics in July 2000. McAdoo attended the conference, after which she led a group of participants on a week-long study tour investigating women's roles, culture, and sewing cooperatives. In this photo, she is shown on an earlier trip, attending a dinner in the Aburi Gardens honoring members of the Lansing Regional Sister Cities Commission. Aburi is one of two Ghanian cities with which Lansing has a sister city relationship. The other is Nsawam. Also pictured (from left to right) are Queen Mother Nana Bekoe, Barbara Roberts (chairperson, Lansing Regional Sister Cities Commission), Maxine Caine (elementary school principal, Lansing, Michigan), and Dr. E. O. Laryea (physician and executive director of Mayday Rural Project, Accra, Ghana). |
