New Appointments - Canadian Studies Centre

Philip Handrick, assistant professor in the Center for Integrative Studies, College of Social Science, was appointed acting director of the Canadian Studies Centre (CSC) in July 2001. Handrick holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from Michigan State University and his involvement in centre activities dates to his graduate school period in the mid 1970s. He served as the centre's assistant director (1987-90) and has been on the centre's advisory board since 1995. He has done work on Chippewa hunting and fishing rights, non-French-speaking populations in Quebec, U.S.-Canada free trade, and impacts of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). In the College of Social Science, he continues to teach courses, supply technical support, and direct the Arts and Humanities and Social Science in London and Scotland study abroad program.

A top priority for Handrick is preparation of CSC's application for U.S. Department of Education Title VI funding as a National Resource Center. He also hopes to expand collaborative activities with other units in International Studies and Programs and throughout the university, raise CSC's visibility, and expand awareness of MSU's many Canada-related activities and involvements.

Handrick replaces long-time CSC Director Bill Joyce, who remains active in centre activities and teaches in the Department of Teacher Education.
