Entrants must have an official connection with MSU through membership in one or more of the following categories:
Entries from individuals involved in competition planning or judging, and entries from professional photographers, are not eligible to win, place, or receive major prizes although they may earn "honorable mention".
A maximum of three photographs per entrant may be entered. Entries must be the original work of the entrant, and must be photographs taken outside the United States. Entries must be in either slide format or print format. Prints must be no larger than 8" x 11" in size.
For best results, we recommend using camera capable of capturing images at 5.0 Megapixels or better. Digital photos must be high enough resolution to allow us to produce high-quality 16" x 20" enlargements for our displays. An image with fewer than 5.0 Megapixels may not be suitable for a high quality enlagement. Please keep that in mind when using a digital camera for MSU Global Focus.
Competition organizers will return the submissions if and only if entries are properly labeled and entrants supply a self-addressed, adequately stamped envelope. We will do our best to return the entries intact and promptly. Winners will be contacted and may be required to supply the original negatives or slides of the winning works from which high quality reproductions will then be made for display purposes. These originals will also be returned as soon as possible. Although caution will be exercised with all work, we are not responsible for lost or damaged entries.
Rights are retained by the artist. By signing the entry form and submitting it, however, the artist grants Michigan State University royalty-free use, including the creation and use of derivative works, of their winning (including placing and honorable mention) photograph(s) in displays and in print and electronic publications. The artist will be fully credited in all such displays and publications.
Entrants should be sensitive to the privacy of human subjects. Winning photographs which include people will require signed "Model Release Forms" in cases where the privacy of the individuals pictured may appear to have been infringed upon. Such cases would include but not necessarily be limited to ones where the artist appears to have been intruding on another's seclusion, making private facts public, or making the viewer believe something that isn't true about the subject. In order to facilitate full display options, artists must be prepared to provide release forms upon request.
Entries will be judged on artistic expressiveness, creativity and on the quality of the image. Judges also reserve the right to consider geographic and thematic variety, as well as relevance to MSU's international mission, in selecting the winners. All decisions of the judges are final. The competition organizers reserve the right to disqualify entries which do not conform to the stated contest rules and criteria.
