Attendees:
Discussion:
- Date -- April 7, 2006
- Venue -- North Wing of UMD's Fairlane Conference Center. The
arrangement provides ample space for registration, ideal meeting rooms,
and a logical layout.
- General items (see also Planners
Information):
- Based on the problems that Mike & Dennis had in finding the
main entrance to the North Wing, there should be plenty of directional
signs in the Parking Lot
- An informal tradition is the "night before" dinner at
a local restaurant.
- Can UMD provide some students to work registation?
- We're keeping the lunch fees at $5 for students; $15 for everyone
else. In the past, this amount has covered most of the refreshment
and lunch costs. Buffets have worked well in the past. The registration
form will have a check for special dietary needs.
- In the registration area, there should be tables for handouts and
book displays.
- Flyers describing the Fairlane's Center's facilities will be available.
- Attendance -- In the past, the Roundtable has averaged 30-35
people. Dennis hopes to start a project that would provide a updated list
of academic contacts. Don said that we could use a political science mailing
list. Don, Frank, and Steve will also encourage students to attend. We'll
also do a mailing to faculty in Western Ontario.
- Speakers -- Since the host institution chooses and funds the
luncheon speaker, Don will be the prime mover in finding one
- The concensus was to find someone who could talk about environmental
topics pertinent to Southeast Michigan (Great Lakes, Detroit River/Lake
St. Clair/St. Clair River watershed)
- Homeland security measures: their impact on Michigan-Ontario trade
- If those leads pans out, Mike could see if Gerry Boychuk of the
University of Waterloo to compare health care in the U.S. and Canada.
- If all else fails, Mike can talk about Japanese balloons or Ontario
trash
- Funding -- the host institution has been responsible for the
bulk of the costs but other institutions have helped out. MSU can contributed
$300-$400. Dennis says that "the Consulate General would seriously
consider a request for funding." The Consulate fiscal year ends on
March 31, so
-
Session Topics
-- As in the past, these topics will be listed
on the registration form. The final selection will be based on the interest
indicated by the registrants' preferences. The registration
form will provide space for registrants to indicate aspects of the topics.

Great Lakes Issues: Invasive
species
Border Issues: Customs and Immigration
Past topics can be see at: http://mcsrt.org/annual/planning/topics.htm
- Don and Frank will provide a list of accomodations (will Jan. 31 be
