POWER; A global day of service - powered by Spartans]]> Michigan State University Spartans have a proud tradition of service. From the thousands of students who give back each year through the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement to the significant number of MSU graduates who enter the Peace Corps, Spartans have risen to the challenge to “change the world.” Many are doing just that as volunteers within the university community and in their professional lives, as well as by serving on boards of foundations or as elected officials or by offering their expertise and creative energy to volunteer community projects.

To harness the power of this spirit of service, the second annual SPARTANS WILL. POWER Global Day of Service will be held on April 12, 2014, bringing together Spartan alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends around the world to serve their local communities. This Global Day of Service will celebrate the ongoing service by individual alumni and local alumni clubs as well as be a catalyst for new service commitments. It is just one of a number of service opportunities offered by the MSU Alumni Association and Michigan State University

<![CDATA[Community Engagement Abroad]]> F&OD WORKSHOP

MSU has a long history of incorporating community engagement into study abroad programming. Resonating with MSU’s Bolder by Design vision that “all international activities and programs” should be focused on “helping create sustainable, prosperous, global resilient communities, particularly in disadvantaged and challenged populations,” this type of programming has become increasingly important within study abroad and the wider university community. Whether referred to as service learning, community engagement, or experiential learning, this programming may lead to more active and collaborative learning, the formation of an informed and engaged citizenry, strengthened partnerships, and positive community impacts. This session will include discussion on topics such as terminology; applying theory to practice; philosophical approaches to service learning; models of community engagement; development and implementation of programming; and best practices from the perspective of three MSU programs on three different continents.
Registration is required and free. Lunch will be provided.
