Global Focus Photo Contest Winners Announced
Published: Wednesday, 30 Jan 2013
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Those who frequent the International Center lobby should keep an eye out for some new wall decorations, as this year’s Global Focus photography competition winners have been chosen and will be framed and on display soon.
The contest, which has for more than a decade taken entries from students, faculty, staff and alumni, allows members of the MSU community to share their international experiences through photography. Taken on study abroad, business trips or personal ventures, the hundreds of photographs sent in to International Studies and Programs are narrowed down to a first, second and third place in each category.
First place awards went to a photograph of dancers in the Bhutan by MSU alum Donald Roberts titled “Festival Dancers;” an image of a unique market place titled “Grocery Shopping,” by the Director of the Asian Studies Center, Siddharth Chandra; and psychology major Cayla Johnson’s “In the Mara.”
First, second and third place and honorable mention winners are chosen by a panel of judges from across the university, but there is also the “People’s Choice” award which is determined by the public. Photos were posted in online galleries where the public could vote for their favorite image.
“People’s Choice” winners were “A Nun’s Stroll” by alumnus Gabriel Ferrer, MSU staff member Rajesh Korde’s “Massai Cowherd,” and MSU student Asim Altuwairji’s “Ka’bah.”
All of the 21 winners in the 13th annual Global Focus photo contest will be featured in the 2013 edition of MSU International, an annual magazine published by International Studies and Programs, posted in an online gallery on the Global Focus website and used in numerous publications to reflect MSU’s international engagement.
To see this year’s Global Focus winners, keep an eye on the display in the lobby of MSU’s International Center or visit http://www.isp.msu.edu/awards/photocontest/byyear/2012/ to see them now.
