On Wednesday, March 21 the 2012 International Awards Ceremony was held where Stefan Fletcher won the Homer Higbee International Education Award at MSU.
Stefan Fletcher has had a significant impact on internationalizing the campus during his academic career. Fletcher, a current doctoral candidate in higher, adult, and lifelong education (HALE), made his mark as an advocate for international students and international education issues while completing his law degree and serving on the Council of Graduate Students (COGS).
An effective “behind the scenes” leader Stefan’s contributions include:
· Securing COGS support for the annual Thanksgiving dinners which is co-hosted by the Graduate Employees Union (GEU) and the International Students Association (ISA). This event provides international students with a uniquely American holiday experience and has attracted more than 400 participants over the past several years.
· Modifying the COGS funding rules to permit the financial support of food at various student events. Making this change has been significant as food can add a unique cultural experience to international events.
· Helping raise $80,000 to offset child care expenses for International students with families.
· Assisting with a collaborative effort among Residence Halls Association, Pan-Hellenic Council and Residential and Hospitality Services to bring attention to tsunami relief efforts in Japan. These efforts raised over $5,000.
Fletcher exemplifies not only a willingness to learn about the needs of diverse populations but also a diligence to collaborate. He has had a significant impact in many areas leaving a meaningful mark on MSU’s international programming. A true Spartan, Stefan Fletcher is a worthy recipient of the Homer Higbee Award.
