Katherine J. Pitsch selected for $10,000 DACOR Bacon House graduate fellowship Katherine Pitsch, a James Madison College senior, has been selected as the MSU recipient of a prestigious graduate fellowship sponsored by Diplomatic and Consular Officers, Retired (DACOR), an association of retired U.S. Foreign Service officers with offices in Washington, D.C. Pitsch is majoring in International Relations with a specialization in Muslim Studies. She has studied Arabic and Kazakh at MSU, and is also fluent in Spanish. MSU is one of only eight institutions nation-wide chosen in fall 2004 to nominate students for this year’s award, which includes a 2005-2006 academic year tuition stipend of up to $10,000 for master’s level study in international affairs at a U.S. university. The fellowship, in memory of Margaret Niles Butler, is awarded primarily on the basis of academic excellence, although a career objective in public service may be a factor in the decision. Three seniors were nominated by MSU after an on-campus application process and were interviewed by the DACOR Bacon House Foundation Education Committee in March. Pitsch reports that she is currently deciding between a master’s program in Arab Studies at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service (with subdisciplines in history, linguistics, and political science) or a master’s program in Modern Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Michigan. She intends to continue her study of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the greater Middle East. After earning a master’s degree, she plans to pursue a doctorate in preparation for a career in academia or the foreign service. Pitsch has been the recipient of numerous merit-based scholarships while at MSU and has been active in a variety of student organizations.
