WHO WE ARE
We are a Lansing-based
Chapter of the United Nations Association of the United States of America
(UNA-USA): a nonpartisan, nonprofit national organization working at the
United Nations headquarters in New York in Washington, and in hundreds of
communities across the country. Our goal is to make the United Nations even
more effective than it is today by bringing about changes that will improve
the lives of people all over the world.
GLUNA was opened on October 24, 1979. It was established to promote the
principles of the United Nations and to foster world understand and
international education. The Center features a gift shop with crafts and
items from around the world, UNICEF cards and materials and educational
resources from the United Nations and many of its organizations. The Center
is staffed entirely by volunteers and supported by the sale of international
crafts and gifts, and by donations.
Founded over a quarter-century ago, UNA-USA is recognized worldwide as a
major foreign policy organization, with influence as the highest level of
decision-making. Today we have a diverse membership of more than 30,000
people from all parts of the United States who want to know about the global
issues that affect their lives and exactly what the U.N. is going to address
them. Issues like regional conflict, world hunger, human rights abuses, drug
trafficking, deforestation, and AIDS.
In Lansing, we are also uniquely visible in the community at 2010 East
Michigan Avenue. You are invited to visit our center where you will find a treasure store of information about
nations of the world, fine books, and special gifts of crafts and art from
many lands.
WHAT WE DO
UNA-USA brings people
together to effect change. Through our nationwide citizens network and
affiliated organizations, you will have the opportunity to freely exchange
ideas with other globally-minded people. And you will also have the chance
to meet with and talk to diplomats and policymakers-from both the U.S. and
abroad-to gain insight on the issues that you would never get from the usual
news sources.
Each year UNA-USA coordinates the observance of U.N. Day (October 24)
in communities throughout the nation and it supports Model U.N. conferences
for local high school and college students, often featuring senior U.N.
officials and representatives of U.N. member governments. UNA-USA provides
information, seminars, and educational materials on the work of the U.N. and
other global issues for the students, scholars, Congress, the media, and
people like you-all aimed at shaping an agenda for a stronger and more
effective United Nations.
