Education - School Gardens

School gardens can be a source of food to supplement school feeding programs, a site for formal learning and teaching, and a space for non-formal community education.

As sites for learning, school gardens offer an ideal location for inquiry-based and experiential learning on a wide range of topics from “difficult subjects” such as science and math to life and livelihood skills. Such inquiry-based and experiential learning opportunities have the potential to integrate school-based learning into student's everyday lives by using real world examples as teaching tools.

Parents and other villagers can be involved in a school garden as well as observe their children, take note of successful gardening techniques, acquire new knowledge, and adopt new skills and agricultural technologies. School gardens hold potential to be both a “learning laboratory” and a bridge between the school and village life.
