Through a participatory wealth-ranking study, community members determined the following characteristics to describe well-off and poor households in our two target communities:
A well-off household...
Naitolia
- Owns 600-800 cattle, 150-200 sheep/goats, and around 10 donkeys
- Has 6-10 wives and 20-30 children
- Is able to cultivate 10-20 acres of maize to supplement food products from livestock
Milola
- Owns 200-300 coconut trees
- Owns over 50 acres of farmland
- Has 2-3 rental houses
- Is able to cultivate 10-20 acres of rice for sale
- Uses hired labor
- May own motor vehicle or milling machine
- Has children in secondary school
- Has political influence in the community and outside
A poor household...
Naitolia
- Has none of the assets of well-off households
- May have a wife and children
- Depends on tending to the cattle owned by richer people
- Cultivates less than 1/2 acre of maize for subsistence
- Always late in planting, maize harvested when still green
- Cannot pay taxes or send children to school
- Cannot pay for medical care
- Has a dilapidated house and very poor clothing
Milola
- Has none of the assets of well-off households
- Cultivates less than 1/2 acre of crops for subsistence
- Always late in planting, maize harvested when still green
- Cannot pay taxes or send children to school
- Cannot pay for medical care
- Has a dilapidated house and very poor clothing
