International Travel Authorizations & Instructions

MSU international travelers should review the following information as soon as they know that they may travel abroad and well in advance of departure.


MSU Resources

  • Travelers Abroad Emergency Contact Database - International Studies and Programs collects international itineraries and emergency contact information for faculty, staff, students and independent contractors going abroad on MSU business (not related to Study Abroad) and stores it in a web-based electronic record. Once your overseas trip is registered in the database (usually 5 days of submitting your travel authorization form) you will receive this Confirmation of Registration Memo (PDF).
  • Medical and Other Emergencies - See (MSU Travel Office) for an overview of MSU procedures and essential information. MSU faculty, staff, and students traveling abroad on University business, assignment or programs (excluding MSU study abroad) must read this information.
  • Safety in Study Abroad includes important safety information for students, staff and faculty who are participating in or leading MSU study abroad programs.
  • MSU Travel Office is a resource for MSU business travelers and travel arrangers that contains documents on travel policies, latest travel news, contracted travel vendors, sample forms and links to outside sources of travel information.
  • MSU Travel Clinic includes information on international immunizations and health-related advice pertaining to preparation for traveling abroad. This information should be viewed as soon as possible, due to necessary lead times for some immunizations!
  • MSU Global Access Travel page includes information and resources to help you plan or prepare for international travel, including country and regional specific information, news sources and other travel- related resources.
  • Study Abroad Risk and Security Assessment Committee is a University-level working group that reviews study abroad programs for safety and security concerns. Its purpose is to minimize potential sources of risk to the extent feasible at study abroad sites.

  • U.S. Department of State offers a free travel registration service for United States citizens who are traveling/moving to a foreign country. Registration can also help the Department of State provide assistance in case of an emergency while abroad.
  • The Bureau of Consular Affairs includes up-to-date information from the U.S. Department of State regarding consular affairs, services such as passports and visas and other resources.
  • Travel warnings provide important information about other countries, safety and travel precautions and general advice for international travelers.
  • Overseas Security Advisory Council includes timely information and news updates for the private sector, including colleges and universities, on which to make informed decisions about security issues.
  • CDC Travel is the most up-to-date travel health information from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Center for Infectious Diseases.
  • WHO provides breaking news from the World Health Organization and access to International Travel and Health Web site.
  • Canada consular affairs - Countries A to Z is an additional resource on international affairs and safety that focuses on information for Canadian citizens.
  • ASIRT includes study abroad international road safety brochures from the Association for Safe International Road Travel.
