MSU’s International Analyst for Travel Health, Safety & Security

In January 2007, MSU appointed Julie Friend as MSU’s International Analyst for Travel Health, Safety & Security. This is a joint appointment in the Office of Study Abroad and International Studies and Programs. Ms. Friend’s primary responsibility is to coordinate MSU's initial response to emergencies abroad involving MSU students, staff or faculty on university-sponsored travel. She also oversees use of the Travelers Abroad Emergency Contact Information Database, a web-based electronic record of faculty, staff and non-study abroad student international travel.

In addition, she assists in the interpretation and development of University policies, procedures, and practices related to faculty, staff, and student travel abroad, with special emphasis on risk analysis, emergency preparedness, and crisis management. Ms. Friend serves as an ex-officio member of the MSU Risk and Security Assessment Committee and works regularly with the Department of Police and Public Safety, Judicial Affairs, General Counsel, Risk Management, and the University Physician.

Any MSU employee who is traveling for employment, research or study purposes to a country or region where safety or security might be of concern can request a security consult with Ms. Friend. Her office is located in Room 109 of the International Center. She may be reached by phone at 517-432-8686 or by e-mail at friendju@msu.edu.

If you are abroad as an MSU Student or Employee and need to report an emergency situation or get emergency assistance, the 24/7 hotline number is 517-353-3784.
