  • In the event of a scheduling conflict for the April 1, 2008, workshop, consider attending the Fulbright Graduate Student Workshop on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, in room 303 International Center from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Otherwise e-mail Professor Frank M. D'Itri (ditri@msu.edu), the MSU Fulbright Program Adviser (FPA), and request to be added to the mailing list to receive information about the Fulbright IIE application process, future workshops, program deadlines, and other relevant issues.

May, 2008

  • Fulbright IIE applicants can initiate the online application process on May 1, 2008. First read all sections of this webpage Before You Start. Additional information is available in Application Instructions, Applicant FAQs, and Tips for Completing the Application.
  • To begin the application process, open Apply Now and follow the instructions. List Professor Frank M. D'Itri, the MSU Fulbright Program Adviser, as your MSU contact. For additional help in completing the IIE application, view these guides: Filling Out the Fulbright IIE Application Forms and the Fulbright Proposal Writing Guide.
  • Begin brainstorming with faculty advisers and other resource persons to develop a plan of study/research. Commence an initial draft of a two page, single-spaced proposal and a one-page, single-spaced curriculum vitae narrative.
  • Make appointments with your academic adviser and the professors or others you plan to ask for letters of recommendation. Provide them with copies of your preliminary proposal, curriculum vitae narrative, and any other helpful information to enable them to submit their recommendation letters to the MSU FPA by September 25, 2008. Make a second appointment to review the draft proposal and solicit their suggestions on how to revise and strengthen your preliminary proposal and curriculum vitae narrative.
  • Identify and begin to contact likely cooperating agencies, universities, and/or other organizations in your chosen host country to request letters of affiliation.

June-July, 2008

  • Solicit the assistance and advice of appropriate faculty, other advisers, and fellow students to review your proposal and curriculum vitae narrative critically. Then revise your application online.
  • Contact all of the academic institutions you have attended since high school and request that original transcripts be mailed directly to the MSU FPA.
  • Contact the relevant MSU language department to locate a qualified instructor to document your language proficiency, if applicable. Request that the Foreign Language Report be mailed directly to the MSU FPA.
  • Follow up the initial contact with collaborating agencies, universities, or other organizations in your host country to determine the status of your request for a letter of affiliation. Whenever appropriate, provide them with a draft of your proposal. Their letter of affiliation must be printed on the host organization's letterhead stationery.

August-September 2008

  • Reschedule appointments with the individuals you have asked to write recommendation letters. Before your meeting, send them your revised proposal and curriculum vitae narrative for their review and critique. If they have not yet written and submitted your recommendation letter online, gently remind them to do so before the September 25, 2008, deadline.
  • If you have not received a letter of affiliation from the collaborating agency/university/organization in your intended host country by August 25, 2008, immediately re-contact them and request that they to mail it to you or the MSU FPA as soon as possible but no later than the September 25, 2008, deadline.
  • On or about September 1, 2008, enter your IIE application on line to check/confirm that your three recommendation letters and Foreign Language Report, if applicable, are attached. Also confirm that all university transcript(s), and any host country letters of acceptance, affiliation, and/or endorsement have also been received and/or submitted to the MSU FPA.
