Student Health Insurance

To fulfill U.S. Immigration and Naturalization (INS) requirements, all students are required by law to have adequate health insurance during their entire period of residence in the U.S. All VIPP participants and all their family members must be enrolled in the MSU insurance plan unless they provide proof that they have bought comparable insurance from their home country, which fulfills the INS waiver guidelines. A copy of the current waiver guidelines may be requested from the VIPP office. The 2006-2007 annual *rates are as follows:

Please note: If you would like to buy health insurance in your home country, the coverage of the health insurance should be at least $50,000 for the applicant and the family members of the applicant.

Driver's license

International driver's licenses are considered official forms of identification in the U.S. However, recently there have been a large number of international licenses that have been falsified, so State and local law enforcement officials may not accept them as valid forms of identification. You should bring your license from your home country and apply for a Michigan driver's license soon after you arrive.

Children's educational documents

  • Immunization certificate

    Michigan State Law prohibits a principal or teacher from admitting new entrants to school without a record of having vaccines for the following diseases. You are required to provide your children's record of vaccination in English from your home country to enter schools in the U.S. Children who do not have the required immunizations will be excluded from school until parents provide proof that ALL REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS have been GIVEN, or have a waiver on file.

    The followings are required:

    1) Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis, 2) Polio, 3) Measles, Mumps & Rubella, 4) Hepatitis B, 5) Varicella (Chickenpox)
  • Transcripts for children

Housing

On-campus one and two-bedroom apartments are available,costing $659-$875 per month (including utilities). Off-campus one and two-bedroom apartments are also available near campus, costing approximately $750-$1,050 per month (NOT including utilities).
