Below are the items to prepare before your departure.

Student Health Insurance

To fulfill U.S. Immigration and Naturalization (INS) requirements, all students are required by law to have adequate health insurance during their entire period of residence in the U.S. All VIPP participants and all their family members must be enrolled in the MSU insurance plan unless they provide proof that they have bought comparable insurance from their home country that fulfills the INS waiver guidelines. A copy of the current waiver guidelines may be requested from the VIPP office.

The 2002-2003 annual *rates are as follows:

Basic Optional/Catastrophic
Rate for one VIPP participant......... $1,086 ················· $335
Additional cost for a spouse........... $3,126·················· $335
Additional cost for one child........... $1,860·················· $335
For two or more children................ $2,338·················· $335

Waiver Guidelines

1. Have a maximum benefit of not less than $50,000 per Accident.
2. Have a maximum benefit of not less than $50,000 per Sickness.
3. Have a Deductible not in excess of $500 per individual, per Policy Year.
4. Include inpatient and outpatient coverage for both Sickness and Injury.
5. Include payment of benefits worldwide (exemption from coverage in an International student's home country is acceptable).
6. Have coverage effective dates matching one of the followings:
-Annual: August 15, 2003 through August 14, 2004
-Fall only: August 15, 2003 through December 31, 2003

*If you would like to buy health insurance in your home country, the coverage of the health insurance must be a minimum of $50,000 for applicant and family members. We recommend higher than $50,000 in the event of catastrophic illness.

Housing Costs

On-campus Residence hall (Dormitory)
One student in a double room: approximately $2,800 per semester.
(This housing cost does not cover the interim term between the first semester and the second semester. Prices current as of June 18, 2003)
