How can the Office for Education Abroad, the Office of International Health and Safety, and program directors work together to mitigate risk on education abroad? As participation grows, faculty and staff must adapt education abroad programs to fit growing security concerns while also managing everyday safety issues like illness and traffic accidents. This workshop is intended to introduce program directors the best possible practices of student instruction in order to reduce the risk of harm while abroad. We will discuss how program structure (hotel location, transportation, meeting places, etc.) is integral to minimizing risk, with a specific emphasis on programs that operate in major urban areas. While it may not be possible to prevent all harm while abroad, informed and thoughtful program design can greatly reduce incidents and lead to a happier, safer trip.
