Studying abroad has always been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember and played a large factor in my Leroi fountain.jpgdecision of a university. When I came across the Hispanic Studies in Valencia program, I immediately fell in love. I would like to gain fluency in the Spanish language and thought that one of the best ways to work towards my goal would be to participate in an immersion program.

Upon arriving in Spain on January 9, 2019, the sun streamed in through the bus window that was transporting those of us on the group flight from the airport to the football stadium, Mestalla. Palm trees covered the streets and the architecture was so much different than what I was used to in the United States. It all contained so much history and was so much prettier than that of the United States. Upon meeting my host mother, Carmen, I felt extremely overwhelmed because she only spoke Spanish and my Spanish skills were not strong enough to effectively communicate with her upon arrival. Her food was absolutely AMAZING though! The aroma of spices including paprika, curry, and garlic always filled the air in the house of Carmen and I looked forward to every meal. As time passed, I received an opportunity to speak English with an eleven-year-old and a thirteen-year-old as well as an internship opportunity at the local private hospital, Quiron. My Spanish skills continued to improve as it was the only way I could communicate with locals. Also, I made a friend that attends the University of Valencia named Mar who I met with occasionally to continue to practice my Spanish as well as help her with her English.

Although my speaking fluency of the language still needs work, I am proud of how much my Spanish has improved and have gained life skills from my experience abroad. I now know that I am capable of anything that I put my mind to and feel more independent than before my experience. Also, I feel sure of the person I have become and secure with myself. I know that I am capable of handling new challenges including improving my language proficiency and feel ready to tackle my senior year of college. Additionally, every single person I met while abroad has shaped me in one way or another. They are all so amazing in their own way, motivated, and willing to accomplish new challenges.
