My time abroad in Madrid was an incredibly valuable experience, and I feel truly fortunate to have learned so much in a different cultural environment. From the moment I left the airport, I knew this was a place unlike any I had ever visited. The streets buzzed with energy, and lively cafes spilled laughter and conversation onto every corner, giving me a sense of community and social connection that I hadn’t experienced before in the United States. Towering buildings with intricate European architecture made wandering the city a visual delight, and the quick, easy metro system made it simple to reach any part of the city I wanted to explore. Every day was filled with exploring different neighborhoods, plazas, and hidden gems.
One of my main goals for studying abroad was to improve my Spanish, and through conversing with locals and ordering my meals in Spanish, I was able to make significant progress in both my speaking and understanding. I can now connect with my Spanish-speaking family members in a way I couldn't before. I quickly realized that Spain is not a place where you are ridiculed for struggling with the language. Most locals were patient, helpful, and understanding when I attempted to speak Spanish. This created a low-pressure learning environment that made practicing enjoyable, especially since many Spaniards are also learning English.
Whenever I felt down or homesick, I found community and support in Madrid’s skateboarding scene. Buying a skateboard at a local shop, I was greeted by an outgoing and curious employee who effortlessly switched between languages, asked about my study abroad experience, and pointed me towards the best skate spots and parks around the city. The skateparks themselves were not only beautiful but also buzzing with a mix of beginners and seasoned skaters. Everyone was welcoming and sociable, whether helping me master a new trick or asking about Michigan and my time in Madrid, the scene became a supportive space that made the city feel a little more like home.
What I once imagined as a challenging, intimidating experience turned out to be one filled with humor, support, and genuine connection.
Immersing myself in a culture full of energy, warmth, and curiosity gave me a fresh perspective on the world and myself. Learning to navigate a big city, communicating in a different language, and connecting with locals helped me step out of my comfort zone and grow as an individual. Studying abroad equipped me with skills that will shape both my academic and professional future. What I once imagined as a challenging, intimidating experience turned out to be one filled with humor, support, and genuine connection.
