Spartans Organize to Support Haiti
Published: Tuesday, 26 Jan 2010
Many Spartans are anxious to support critical needs in Haiti following the recent devastating earthquake. The immediate priority in Haiti is to save lives and stabilize basic services. It is important that we support those trained and equipped to offer assistance under disaster conditions. Individuals rushing to the scene unprepared will only place additional demands on scarce resources and further endanger lives.
Currently, MSU is not deploying faculty or students to Haiti. Under the leadership of the Office of International Studies and Programs (ISP), MSU will continue to assess how members of the MSU community might best help as efforts shift from disaster response to recovery and reconstruction.
To increase the understanding of Haitian culture, history and reconstruction needs, ISP is creating an educational series titled, "Help Haiti Heal." The second seminar in the series is scheduled for Friday, January 29 at 4 pm in room 303 of the International Center. More information on the series is available at theCenter for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Web site.
Spartans can help now by donating funds to organizations supplying food, water, shelter and first aid. The Center for International Disaster recommends selecting an agency with experience in Haiti. You can find a list of these organizations here.
Additionally, MSU students have organized fundraising efforts in collaboration with the American Red Cross Mid-Michigan Chapter. To learn more about their projects please visit the MSU Caribbean Student Association Web site.
