MSU Museum Features International Exhibitions
Published: Wednesday, 04 Oct 2006
The MSU Museum is exploring the diversity of workers cultures in its new exhibit, "Workers Culture in Two Nations: South Africa and the United States." The exhibit, which opened Sept. 24, explores cultural themes around the dominant industries in both countries. Workers' photography, music, poetry, art and crafts narrate the story both in South Africa and the United States. Additionally, Michigan is the primary focus of the American workers culture.
"Workers Culture in Two Nations: South Africa and the United States" will be on exhibit until August 2007 in the MSU Museum's West Gallery.
Additionally, the MSU Museum is hosting "Lest We Forget: The Triumph Over Slavery," an internationally touring exhibition about the cultural, political, economic and social practices of enslaved Africans. The exhibit explores the impact of slavery on the Americas and Europe, as well as the economic, political and social affects in Africa.
The exhibition is based upon the most recent scholarship about the slave trade, and was developed in association with UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It is adopted from an exhibit created by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. Visit http://digital.nypl.org/lwf/english/site/flash.html to learn more.
"Lest We Forget: The Triumph Over Slavery" runs through March 2007 in the MSU Museum's Main Gallery.
