Africa's total forest cover is estimated at 674 million hectares, accounting for 23 percent of the land area and 17 percent of global forest cover. Albert Mwangi, MSU alum and senior officer with the African Development Bank says these forests have immense potential to contribute to the continent's social services--including carbon sequestration and climate stabilization, as well as the protection of water and soil resources.
