MSU and Africa: A Half a Century Collaboration

For more than 50 years, the MSU campus community has led vital, collaborative work in more than half of the countries on the African continentmaking a positive impact on individuals, communities, and nations through research and outreach in fields ranging from health care and agriculture to education and the arts.
This work is carried out through the expertise of more than 170 MSU faculty engaged in research and development work on the continent. Although the numbers are impressive, it is more important to note how MSU engages in its work in Africa. With more than 35 formal partnerships with African universities, governments, and private organizations, MSU seeks strategic partnership with in-country partners to draw upon a broad base of knowledge and resources.
Ranking first in the nation for the number of Africa-related doctoral programs offered, first among U.S. universities for the number of African languages offered, and third in the nation for its African history graduate program, MSU's collaborations with Africa have produce scholars as well as advanced the knowledge around the issues important to development in Africa. And as the nations leader in study abroad participation among public universities, MSU also provides life-changing opportunities for study in Africa for scores of MSU students. We are proud to that more than 38 percent of our students who study abroad do so in Africa.
