Film Screening and discussion: "Koran by Heart"

Date: Thursday, 25 Apr 2013 Time: 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm Location: Okemos Public Library, 4321 Okemos Rd, Okemos

Description

“Koran by Heart” tells the inspiring story of three Muslim children participating in the 2010 edition of the world’s oldest annual Koran reciting contest. These gifted ten-year-olds have dedicated their lives to honoring their families and countries by memorizing the 600-page religious text. At the same time, they have no real understanding of the meaning behind the words, or of the growing conflict in Islam between modernity and fundamentalism.

Dr. Mohammad Khalil (MSU, Religious Studies) will introduce the film, and lead a follow-up discussion.
