Biography: Ismail Adawe is an International Student Advisor serving F-1 students. Growing up in both Africa and North America, he became fascinated with other cultures early on. Ismail went on to earn his undergraduate education at Northwood University (B.A. International Business and Management) and graduate education at Central Michigan University (M.S. International Administration). Prior to joining OISS, Ismail worked with the International Neurologic and Psychiatric Epidemiology Program (INPEP) and the Institute of International Health (IIH) at Michigan State University.

Ismail lived and studied in several African and Middle Eastern countries and worked in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is passionate about assisting international students and about the internalization of Michigan State University. Ismail enjoys learning about the world not only by traveling, but by getting to know the unique and wonderful international students here at Michigan State University.

Biography: Amber Cordell is the Educational Programs Manager at the OISS. She serves as Orientation Coordinator for new international students and organizes cultural and student leadership programs throughout the year. She also facilitates intercultural communication workshops for students, staff, faculty and the community. She served on the national NAFSA leadership team as the Campus and Community Programming Network Leader.

Originally from Mississippi, Amber graduated from Shorter College with degrees in psychology and religion. She also holds a MA in religion, with emphasis on Japanese Buddhism, from Wake Forest University. Amber taught English in Japan for three years through the JET Program and worked with international students and scholars for two years at the University of Kansas Medical Center before moving to East Lansing.

Biography: Bristol Day is an F-1 student advisor and front desk supervisor. Bristol is originally from Detroit and earned her Bachelor's degree from Kalamazoo College in Sociology and Anthropology and her Master's degree from Michigan State University in Student Affairs Administration. She has previously worked at MSU as a Community Director in Residence Education and Housing Services and as an AdviseMI Program Director at the Michigan College Access Network, a nonprofit in Lansing. Bristol has studied abroad in India, Scotland, and England and has spent time in Shanghai and Beijing, China.

Biography: Leydi M Egan is an International Student & Scholar Advisor with OISS. She grew up in Merida, Mexico and has a background in Psychology from her studies in Mexico. She moved to Michigan in 2005 and since then she has earned her ESL certificate and Associate’s Degree from Lansing Community College and a B.A. in Human Resources from Michigan State University. Having had the opportunity to live and study in a different country from her own, she developed a passion for working with people from different countries and cultures. Leydi had three years of professional experience in the HR field until she decided to work more with students by teaching GED classes to Migrant seasonal farm-workers in both English and Spanish languages. In addition to this she collaborates as a Program Leader with the International Engagement in Mexico (IEM) study abroad program, which takes MSU students to Mexico during the MSU spring break to work on service learning projects in the local communities. Her passion for higher education and working in a global and multicultural environment grew even more, leading her to start and eventually complete a Master’s Degree in Higher Education from MSU.

Leydi is also interested in creating a more diverse and inclusive environment in her community and helping people around the world to feel welcomed and cared for. She enjoys participating in and promoting events that empower women, and foster cultural and educational enrichment. Through work and personal traveling, she has had the privilege to visit Edinburgh, Scotland, London, England, and Panama City, Panama as well as several cities in her native Mexico. She would love to travel more to other countries to get to know other customs and cultures.

Biography:

Dr. Kalumbu joined the university’s International Studies and Programs in 2009, first as the assistant to the director of the African Studies Center and then as the program manager for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at MSU.

Dr. Kalumbu was born and raised in Zimbabwe and completed a bachelor of arts in economic history and history, with a minor in philosophy, from the University of Zimbabwe. He went on to earn his doctorate in ethnomusicology, with a minor in African American studies, from Indiana University in 1999.

Biography: Leehoor Ly serves is an F-1 student advisor and works with ISEA Award and International Student Group Funding. Leehoor emigrated from Canada in 2001 and she has called Michigan her home ever since. She earned her undergraduate education at Michigan State University (B.A. Pre-Law Humanities). Leehoor speaks English, Khmer, French and a basic Thai. She would love to travel outside of North American someday to taste cuisines from all around the world.

Biography: Elizabeth Matthews is an Assistant Director at OISS. Liz earned her bachelor's degree in English with a Specialization in Dance from Michigan State University and a master's degree in Higher Education from Loyola University Chicago. Prior professional positions include working as Associate Director of the International Office at Northwestern University and Director of the International Center at Illinois Institute of Technology. In addition, Liz has served as the Chair of International Educators of Illinois, International Student and Scholar Services representative for NAFSA Region V, Regulatory Ombudsperson for NAFSA Region V, Chair of NAFSA Knowledge Community for International Student & Scholar Services, and member of the NAFSA Annual Conference Committee.

She has presented and coordinated numerous workshops and sessions at the regional and national levels of NAFSA: Association of International Educators. A product of the "Study Abroad" culture at MSU, her travels have taken her to many countries including Ireland, Italy, Costa Rica, Nepal, and Singapore. She participated in the 2012 Baden-Württemberg Seminar in Tübingen, Germany and travels to China for OISS’ Pre-Departure Programs to meet with new students and their families. Always a Spartan, Liz is very happy to be serving her alma mater through her work at OISS.
