In June, 2017, Laurie Medina began two years of service as Chair of the Center Directors Section of LASA. This section focuses on issues related to the institutionalization of Latin American Studies via the creation of centers and programs. For example, for the 2018 LASA conference in Barcelona, Medina has organized a panel on the different ways Latin American Studies has been institutionalized across South America, Asia, Europe, and North America and the impact of institutionalization on the development of the field in each region, with panelists representing centers in each region.  The Center Directors Section has prioritized efforts to develop projects to strengthen centers' contributions to the training of Latin Americanist scholars across world regions and to seek foundation support for these projects.
