Jihae Choe, a government officer from Gyeonggi Province, Korea, visited the Office of Great Start in the Michigan Department of Education on November 2nd, 2018. Ms. Choe works in Childcare and Youth Policy division in Gyeonggi Province. Her responsibility is to design and implement childcare policy. Ms. Choe met with Pat Sargent, the manager of Great Readiness Program (GSRP) and Education Consultants: Michelle McManus and Heather Lucas. They discussed the details of the Great Start Readiness Program, including background, qualification of the participating centers, eligibility of students, budget, and the impact of the program.

The Great Start Readiness Program is Michigan's state-funded preschool program for four-year-old children with factors that may place them at educational failure. Research on preschool programs and specific research on GSRP indicates that children provided with a high-quality preschool experience show significant positive developmental differences when compared to children from the same backgrounds who did not attend a high-quality preschool program.

"It was a great opportunity to learn more about the Great Start Readiness Program funded by the State of Michigan, which will be strengthened by the newly elected Governor, and to compare it with the child care policy in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. I was deeply impressed by their hospitality and preparedness, which may be projecting the representing attitude as government officers in the U.S," Ms. Choe states.

VIPP is proud to provide resources to enhance Gyeonggi Province's child care policy. We hope that Jihae Choe had a wonderful learning experience here in Michigan!
