Studying in Ireland was a truly transformative experience that left a lasting impact on me. Immersing myself in the culture, history, and environment of Irish life, while also learning about subjects that captivated my interest, made the journey incredibly fulfilling.
As a Native American, I grew up learning about the colonization of the Americas, and being in Ireland allowed me to explore their rich and complex history, particularly their struggles for independence and cultural preservation. This historical connection between our peoples became even more meaningful when I encountered the respect and appreciation the Irish have for Native Americans—a bond that stems from shared experiences of oppression and solidarity. This warmth made me feel even more at home during my time abroad.
Beyond cultural and historical insights, studying in Ireland equipped me with valuable skills that prepared me for my transition into college. I learned to manage my responsibilities, including turning in assignments and keeping up with readings, while balancing an active social life. The experience taught me the importance of time management, independence, and accountability, all of which are crucial during my freshman year. The academic rigor I encountered, combined with the welcoming and supportive environment, gave me confidence in my ability to thrive in a college setting.
Overall, my time in Ireland broadened my global perspective and instilled in me skills and values that I will carry with me throughout my college journey and beyond.
