I spent 4 months studying animal sciences in relation to Ireland at the University College Dublin (UCD). I learned the differences between the practices in Ireland versus the practices in the United States when it comes to animal production and animal care. Having a great interest in One Health, I was able to take a wildlife conservation course where I learned about the endangered species in Ireland, and the ways conservationists make a difference through collaboration, education, research, and policymaking.
Aside from the education I received, and the new ideas and perspectives I have obtained while studying at UCD, I had found a community that became my family during those 4 months away. I had five roommates from all across the world: two from Germany, two from France, and one from Italy. They opened my eyes to new cultures and traditions from their home countries. We did almost everything together which brought us closer than ever. By putting myself out there, and getting involved with sports, clubs, and societies, I met a handful of locals who have also become some of my close friends. Overall, it was the people that made Ireland a home away from home.
In moving to a different country, I faced several challenges, but from those challenges, I experienced personal growth. I learned to adapt and accept cultural differences, embracing a life outside of my typical norm. Public transportation, although challenging to navigate at first, became a sustainable and substantial part of getting around in Ireland. Without experiencing life in another country, I wouldn’t have the same appreciation for the cultural differences. This experience has given me a new global perspective on the world while also making me a well-rounded person.
This experience is one that is hard to put into words. I’ve acquired a lot of personal growth, gained a lot of animal production and conservation knowledge in Ireland, and met some of the most incredible people. I am beyond thankful for this opportunity, and I couldn’t have done it without the help of supporters like you!
Thank you for your contribution to this life-changing experience!
