I worked all year to afford this program, so receiving the Forest Akers Endowed Scholarship meant everything to me. I’m incredibly thankful for the support that helped make this opportunity possible.

I took two classes abroad: Marketing with Dr. Argyro Kanousi and Crisis Communication with Emmanuel Skoulas. Dr. Kanousi was one of the best professors I’ve had. She cared so much about her students and our learning but also understood that we wanted to travel. Her class transferred directly as a marketing credit I needed. Crisis Communication counted as a PR class which was super helpful since I want to apply to the PR minor this fall. Emmanuel was so funny and really made an effort to make sure we were engaged and understood the concepts. I was also grateful to learn some Greek, and the widespread use of English in classes and daily life made the transition smooth.

Outside of class, I loved exploring local spots, the most notable being Hondos Center—a massive double-decker store like Ulta and Sephora combined, with clothes, bags, and jewelry too. I found great thrift stores, restaurants, and markets nearby. One day in Glyfada, I got fresh-squeezed orange juice from a market for just 4 euros and watched them make it right in front of me. I’d grab grapefruit and a Greek salad almost every day after class. Our dorms were nicer than expected, and my porch was the perfect spot for coffee or relaxing after class.

Traveling with friends from my program was another highlight. I visited two Greek islands- Mykonos and Milos. I also went to Budapest, and the Amalfi Coast, and met people from outside the program and even locals along the way.

One of my favorite memories was a cooking class in Amalfi where we made gnocchi and other dishes I didn’t even recognize, and it ended up being one of the best meals I’ve ever had. In Milos, I took a boat tour and saw Sarakiniko Beach, which was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.

If I have one piece of advice, it would be to put yourself out there early. Try to find people who are excited to go out, explore and say yes to things. Go to orientation events and talk to people. We had a pizza night in our dorms that helped me meet new friends. I was lucky enough to go on this program knowing a few friends from MSU, but I also got to connect with people I had never met at MSU and students from other schools.

If you’re thinking about studying abroad—do it. It’s 100% worth it.

I would like to sincerely thank the Forest Akers Trust for their generous support, which made my study abroad experience possible. This opportunity has had a lasting impact on my academic and personal growth, and I am truly grateful for the trust’s investment in my education.
