Erynn wearing a blue tee shirt leaning against a table in FijiFiji was a brilliant place for me to spend time abroad. My experience with the island of Fiji not only affected me on a deep and personal level but also in my academics.

Over the small span of two weeks, I have become close friends to people that I would have never met without my program. I’ve felt connected from the very beginning, the shared experience allowing us to bond endlessly even after leaving.

My opinions have changed after meeting Fijians, they are no longer an undefined and unknown people, they are now friends, advisors and peers that take up space in my heart and mind. Now that I know the people of Fiji on a personal level, I feel attached to a country that is thousands of miles away. I find myself checking in on current news in Fiji, drawn to know what my friends are going through.

On an academic level, I find myself thankful for luxuries I never knew I had while missing the slow and smooth learning provided by pen, paper, and my inclusion into Fijian culture. I have noticed that I reach out more to students and teachers without fear. I am better able to discuss my opinions on topics regarding environmental effects on our globe from not only a perspective of a United States resident but also as a Fijian student familiar with environmental harm firsthand. Being hosted in Fiji taught me how to share moments without a worry of what comes next, it is a simple act but often so hard to do.

I now reminisce about my time before class, sitting by a newly made friend, Erynn trying to put together a life-sized puzzle of a sea turtlesounds of waves hitting the beach while a light breeze passed past me. Memories like this have shown me just how precious time is and is now used in my daily life to remind me that being present is the best place to be.
