Gracie and classmates play ball game intended for blind peopleThis June I had the amazing opportunity to go with MSU’s kinesiology department to Greece on a study abroad program. This program was my first time abroad and was incredible.

My favorite part of our program was the Perpato camp where we worked alongside paraplegics and learned about their daily struggles and necessary adaptations. We were given hands-on experience in adaptive sports, including a personal experience where I participated in a game for blind people where we tried to stop the ball from getting past us (similar to soccer). This was such an interesting experience and gave me a true appreciation for my body and its abilities. We also participated in wheelchair rugby, sailing and badminton.

Another incredible experience on this program was our Greek dance lessons. We got to tour the College of Thrace and then we’re given private Group of students learning Greek dance in studiocultural dance lessons. I grew up taking dance classes, so this experience really sparked joy for my inner child. I loved getting to move my body which is something we learn a lot about as kinesiology majors. It was also a great way to learn more about Greek culture. One thing I learned was Greeks view women as more delicate than men so in their dances they move more gently and lift their legs lower than the male dancers.
